Performative Tools for an Age of Climate Change
We are pleased to announce our latest project proposal, HAKOTO | Speaking Leaf. This initiative seeks to raise awareness and spark a dialogue about the relationship between nature and climate change through the creation of performative tools and a unique aesthetic experience.
HAKOTO | Speaking Leaf consists of a pair of wireless body-pack sculptures and sound instruments that will allow artists to engage with trees in a new and exciting way. The instruments will use high-specification sensors to measure the reactions of a tree leaf in response to changes in the atmosphere and turn that data into sound. The project will culminate in international exhibitions and an ongoing series of performances. With this new work we aim to engage audiences of all ages and cultural backgrounds.
Led by Reiko and Tim, the creative team includes a diverse group of individuals from various fields, including artists, musicians, hardware and software designers, and an electrical engineer. As we develop the performative elements of the instrument, we will engage a musician/composer and a theater director as well as a new music curator. Our project will be initially tested amongst urban and rural community groups and venues in Scotland and England before it premieres at an international festival in Germany this summer. We will be working toward producing a new LP from initial recordings. The C + G Studio has a long history of successful project management and a focus on interdisciplinary arts-led research. Our approach to public engagement is practical, accessible, and inclusive, and we prioritize diversity, and inclusion in all of our projects. We are committed to sustainable development and fair work practices, and are using Scottish Artist Union and Musician Union pay rates for all team members.
We are excited about the momentum of this project at the outset of this year and look forward to sharing more with you.
