Performance Description:
HAKOTO | Speaking Leaf is a series of live sound art performances that explores the hidden voice of trees through the real-time sonification of their physiological processes. Using specially designed wireless body-pack sculptures and sound instruments, artists Tim Collins and Reiko Goto, together with Chris Malcolm, engage empathetically with trees by converting environmental data into soundscapes.
The performance utilizes high-specification sensors that translate real-time data—sunlight, photosynthesis, moisture, temperature, and respiration of tree leaves—into sound compositions. These sounds are mapped to the traditional Japanese Gagaku yo scale, a pentatonic structure where the intervals create a dynamic, meditative auditory experience.
- Photosynthesis is represented through the rhythmic sounds of a large drum and flute, symbolizing the tree’s energy production.
- Transpiration is conveyed by a small drum, string instruments, and a metal gong, reflecting the moisture flow and breath of the leaves.
- Light Intensity is articulated with a trembling flutter or tremolo, illustrating the dynamic interplay of sunlight.
This poetic, cross-disciplinary installation seeks to deepen the audience’s understanding of trees as more-than-human beings with which we share our environment. The sound performances evoke the hidden rhythms of trees, fostering an intimate relationship between humans and the natural world.
