San Francisco Art Institute, MFA Exhibition
H2OME was a site-generated installation consisting of 2,500 glasses of water. Intended to objectify the permeating natural forces surrounding mason, light and water, light and water, light and water.
The artist wrote at the time: As I walked through the pier, imagining my final work for the MFA exhibition I was moving south to north. I was aware of the eastern light, at dawn that would appear over the Oakland hills, and the Golden Gate to the west where the sun sets and the Pacific Ocean tides and the winds come into the city. As I looked for an impetus for this work I became more aware of the sensitivity and strength of the prevalent natural forces. I also saw the need to connect the static interior more closely to the dynamic exterior.
Water is the life-blood of the planet, we are it, it is us. The planets water’s and seas are a perfect blend of strength and sensitivity. I only wish to approach this strength and sensitivity in my art and my life. In some ways this work is a microcosmic view of our immediate realities. Look through each glass, it holds an image of it’s total surrounding, alike yet perceptibly different. Not so different from our own individual perceptions of a shared but disconnected reality.
