He Never Ate Solid Food

Tim Collins
The Hotel Show, Oakland, California, Jo Babcock, Curator

In preparing for this exhibition in a run down vacant old hotel, Collins came upon the following anonymous text; it initiated an imaginative narrative about a man who lived a life of obsessive consumption of water, in an attempt to dilute or ameliorate some deep seated pain. The installation consisted of thousands of glasses of water, a waterbed of sorts and the text written on the wall, presented within a room that was painted a bright sea/sky blue.

The assuaging waters cool slowly bringing relief, abstracting form from all that can be touched. The quivering fever heat of long repressed desire yields to the cooling draught. Water and pain negate each other, long is the process of the cooling draught.
