Plein Air in ‘Resounding Change: Sonic Art and the Environment’

Plein Air is a unique art installation that was featured in the exhibition “Resounding Change: Sonic Art and the Environment” at the John W. Bardo Fine and Performing Arts Center at Western Carolina University. This exhibition was a collaboration between the WCU Fine Art Museum and School of Music and focused on the theme of sustainability and the environment.

The installation, created by Tim Collins and Reiko Goto Collins, was a sculptural instrument that analyzed CO2 production, transpiration, and photosynthesis from plants in real-time. The plants in the gallery then produced a live, real-time sound for visitors as they responded to conditions in the environment.

This exhibition was curated by Carolyn Grosch, Curator of Collections & Exhibitions at the WCU Fine Art Museum, and Tyler Kinnear, Musicologist and Arts Instructor in the Belcher College of Fine and Performing Arts at WCU. It was supported by the WCU Campus Theme Committee, the WCU School of Art & Design, Guitar Center, and Winding Stair Nursery in Franklin, NC.
