Tim Collins
Public Art Works Marin, California, Susan Pontious, Director
Location: Tiffany Park, 315 Bridgeway, Sausalito, CA 94965 (near the corner of Bridgeway and Richardson), overlooking San Francisco Bay
Asked to construct an undeclared memorial, Collins sought form and function that would suggest the memory of a long lost sibling. A structure that was firm, yet built to contain an ethereal, experiential phenomenon which is more spirit than matter.
A heavy but small stone structure with a whitewashed plaster interior houses a light projection system. The original mechanism used an airtight plexiglass ceiling holding one inch of water, with a pump delivering a constant drip. The concentric circles from the water droplet were broadcast on the floor and walls of the structure in shadow form — slowly moving from the floor up the walls and dissipating into the light that washes the ceiling.
Created by Tim Collins in 1990 and commissioned by Public Art Works Marin, California (Susan Pontious, Director), the work was subsequently gifted to the City of Sausalito. It is part of the City of Sausalito Public Art collection. The work was restored in 2016 with funding from the Sausalito Woman’s Club.
